Extract from letter from Nursing Sister M.Lee, dated July 5th, 1915,

employed at the Hong Kong Civil Hospital since 1903, Still there;-

"I shall be very glad if you will ask the Committee if they will

arrange a transfer for me to another Colony as Katron in a Government

Hospital, and if they will ascertain if my pension will carry forward

to another place? You will see by the books I came here in 1903,

During that time I have been very happy in my work, until within the

last three years. It will be impossible to explain fully in a letter

the various reasons of the general dissatisfaction amongst the Staff,

but as several of the Sisters who have left in the past year, intended

seeing you, and giving you all particulars, you will, I believe,

understand the conditions have become almost intolerable. As some of

the ot er Sisters are writing you on the subject, I will not go into

details, but will he pleased to answer any questions you may like to

ask"

Extract from letter from Nursing Sister K.Sloan, dated August 6th,

1915, employed in the Hong Kong Civil Hospital since 1907. Still there:

H I am writing to ask if a transfer from here to another

Government post can be arranged for me? I am anxious of course that

it should be in a pensionable Colony, and that my service here (over

8 years) should count for pension. As to my reasons for asking for

this transfer - when I returned from leave 2 years ago, I came back

with every intention of settling down and continuing my work here, but

since then the conditions have so entirely changed, that I have more

than once been on the verge of sending in my resignation. Ever since

Dr.Johnson has been Principal Civil Kedical Officer the spirit of

unrest and dissatisfaction has been very great. He has taken away

all the spirit of harmony and loyalty that should exist in an

Institution like this, and to me has spoiled the pleasure I have

always had in my work. I suppose you have heard of the trouble there

was before Miss Astin left? In that matter I consider the policy he

adopted was so unfair, that it has lowered the standard here. Since

his arrival Kiss Faker's (katron) attitude to the Sisters has, at

times, been most objectionable, and not one of us is looking forward
